Continue by coach to Bach
Ma Temple and Memorial House Museum. Then it will be time to
experience Vietnam’s most traditional form of transport – the cyclo.
Your personal cyclo will take you through the streets of the Old
Quarter for a one hour cyclo tour. These fascinating streets still
bear the names of the shops of the 15th to 18th Centuries - Jewelers
Street, Jute Street, even Grilled Fish Street.
The cyclo tour will end at Dong Xuan Market where there will be time
for exploring.
Free time for lunch in the Old Quarter.
After lunch, visit the Military Museum, offering a fascinating
insight into the history of the Vietnamese army’s defence against
foreign invaders. The museum covers the wars against the Chinese,
the French Colonists and the Americans.
Attend the mid afternoon performance of the famous Water Puppet
Show. The 'stage' is a pool of water in which the hidden puppeteer
must stand (waist deep!) to skilfully manoeuvre dancing puppets
attached to bamboo poles on its surface. Each short skit in the
performance relates to the daily life of the people, and featured
are scenes such as 'Returning from School after Graduation' and
'Rearing Ducks and Chasing Foxes'. Return to hotel to freshen up for
dinner.
This evening transfer to the Wild Rice Restaurant for our Welcome
Dinner, where a delicious meal in the Bamboo Bar will introduce you

HANOI
Morning Hanoi city tour. The grandeur and solemnity of
Ho Chi Minh's monumental Mausoleum, the incongruous rustic
simplicity of the house in which 'Uncle Ho' lived out his final
years, the religious pride that constructed the beautiful temple of
Literature compound - it's all here in Hanoi, a microcosm of the
Vietnamese culture.
Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a commanding stone monument which
houses the embalmed remains of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s national hero
- a pilgrimage site for many Vietnamese. Visitors file silently past
his glass tomb to pay their respects. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum.
Nearby is the One Pillar Pagoda, which was built by the Emperor Ly
Thai Tong, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. Constructed of wood on a
single stone pillar, it is designed to resemble a lotus blossom.
Continue to the Temple of Literature - a peaceful series of walled
courtyards and graceful gateways. This monument is one of the
best-preserved examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture.
Founded in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius, this was also the site
of Vietnam's first university. In one courtyard, giant stone
tortoises bear stelae on their backs, listing the accomplishments of
graduating scholars. Visit Hang Gai Street, the centre for silk.
After lunch at Hoa Sua School Restaurant you will be free for the
rest of the afternoon and for dinner this evening. |

kilometres. Considered Vietnam's greatest natural wonder, it is also
believed to be home to its very own Loch Ness monster.

You will be welcomed on board with a cocktail, followed by a cruise
briefing, safety instructions and check into cabins.

Day 6
Sat 17 Apr
B L |
HUE
Visitors to Hue are often taken aback to discover that the
sleepy provincial town of Hue was once the religious, economic and
cultural epicentre of Vietnam - the mighty Imperial headquarters,
and the political capital of the country until 1945. Thirteen Nguyen
Dynasty Emperors ruled Vietnam from Hue, building a fortress around
the ancient city, a huge Citadel, with walls 10 metres thick,
modelled on Beijing's Forbidden City.
Even this seemingly
impenetrable defence was useless during the Vietnam War Tet
Offensive of 1968, when the proud city of Hue was reduced to ruins.
Recognising its value, the government introduced a massive
restoration programme and in 1993 Hue was proclaimed a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
Enjoy a morning cruise on the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu
Pagoda and the Imperial Citadel. Visit the colourful Dong Ba Market.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
The hills surrounding Hue are dotted with the tombs of the Nguyen
dynasty emperors. Built not only as an eternal resting place, the
tombs were designed for recreation; somewhere the Emperor could
fish, hunt and enjoy the company of concubines in his twilight
years. we visit two of the most contrasting tombs.
Visit first the Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, resplendent in traditional
architecture, paved walkways, resting pavilions overlooking tranquil
lotus ponds, and a small forest for hunting. In stark contrast, the
Tomb of Khai Dinh, the 'Puppet Emperor' because of his affiliation
with the French, was designed with colonial flair.
Return to hotel. Free for dinner. |

base.

HOI AN
Morning visit to the Central Market followed by a walking
tour of Hoi An. This picturesque riverside town, known as Faifo to
ancient traders, was one of South East Asia’s major international
ports from the 17th to 19th centuries. In a country so ravaged by
war, Hoi An managed to remain untouched, and as you wander the
completely traffic-free streets of this ancient seaport it is not
hard to imagine yourself amidst the sailors and merchants of the
18th Cetury. Chinese, Japanese and European architecture bears
witness to a cosmopolitan past and allows today's visitors a glimpse
of Vietnam that no longer exists elsewhere.
Lunch at the famous Cargo Club.
Afternoon and evening at leisure to explore on your own. Free for
dinner. |

could just relax at the resort and enjoy the surroundings and

some cycling, as the resort provides bicycles for use of guests, or
you could take a Cham Island tour, including boat trip to Cham
Island, snorkelling and lunch on the island. (this to be confirmed
with guide 2 days before and not included in price of tour).
You could also attend a cooking lesson at the famous Ms Vy’s Cooking
School, including a morning visit to the market, cooking lesson and
lunch (also not included in price of tour)

HOI AN – HO CHI MINH CITY (SAIGON)
Mid morning flight on Vietnam
Airlines scheduled flight Danang to Ho Chi Minh City, to use its
official name, although to residents and visitors alike it is
universally and affectionately known as Saigon.
On arrival, lunch at a local restaurant, while our luggage is
transferred to the hotel.
Afternoon city orientation tour. Saigon is surely one of the most
evocative place names in Asia and definitely one of the most
extraordinary cities in the world. The most Western in atmosphere of
Vietnam's cities, it has a population of 5 million, and a booming
free-market economy. It is a city of amazing contrasts: elegant new
international hotels, exclusive restaurants and trendy bars
side-by-side with roadside noodle stalls, street children and
vociferous cyclo drivers.
Our tour stops at places of interest including the colonial General
Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral. Continue to the Reunification
Palace, once known as the Presidential Palace. It was toward this
building that the first Communist tanks rolled into Saigon on the
morning of 30 April, 1975.
Next visit the lush Botanical Gardens and History Museum. The
gardens were one of the first projects undertaken by the French in
1864 after the establishment of Cochinchina and were the finest
gardens in Asia at the time. As you enter the gates of the Gardens
two inspiring architectural feats await you, the History Museum and
the Temple of King Hung Vuong, a tribute to the Hung Kings who are
said to be the first rulers of Vietnam before the Chinese invaded.
Then, do as the locals do, on the back of a trendy Vespa motorbike
(a 20 minute ride with qualified driver and helmet) you will cruise
the streets of the city ending at the Central Market also known as
Ben Thanh Market, filled with colourful stalls selling everything
from fresh bread, flowers and fish to linen, handbags and
lacquerware all under one roof! Coach will be available for those
who prefer this mode of transport.
Check in at the LEGEND HOTEL
www.legendsaigon.com where deluxe river
view rooms have been reserved for the group.
Free for lunch.
The rest of afternoon will be at leisure.
Dinner at a local restaurant. |

Day 11
Thu 22 Apr

SAIGON
This morning visit the Jade Emperor Pagoda and War Remnants
Museum, formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes. This
museum is the single most popular attraction in Vietnam today.
Whilst not for the faint hearted it does provide an extremely
intense and disturbing look at the affects of war on this nation as
seen from the side of the Vietnamese from the French times through
to the American.
Afterwards take cyclo tour to Cholon to visit the Binh Tay Market
Cholon, which literally translates to 'big market', is the focus of
the Chinese community in Saigon. This is a colourful wholesale
market, bustling with trading activity and selling very inexpensive
clothing, shoes, accessories and fresh produce.
See Cha Tam Church where President Diem sought refuge shortly before
his assassination in 1963.
Visit the impressive Thien Hau Temple
dedicated to the goddess of the seas, who is said to protect
fishermen and sailors. Here huge coils of incense hang from the
ornate ceiling, and can burn for up to three months at a time.
Lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant.
Rest of afternoon at leisure. Free for dinner this evening. |
| |
|
Day 12
Fri 23 Apr
B L |
TSAIGON
This morning visit a lacquer workshop to see the artisans at
work.
Continue to the Cao Dai Holy See Temple.
The Cao Dai religion is unique to Vietnam and is a blend of both
ancient and modern beliefs. The Great Temple at Tay Ninh is the
centre of this faith, demonstrated by an exotic temple, often
likened to something from Disneyland! Here followers of this
eclectic religion worship saints such as Victor Hugo, Joan of Arc
and even Shakespeare. A highlight of this tour is the very colourful
yet formal service held at midday, which we will be able to observe.
Following the service, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon visit to Cu Chi where you will visit the vast underground
network of tunnels built first as a defence against the French, and
later expanded during the American war.
It was from here that the
North Vietnamese waged their guerrilla warfare and you will marvel
at their ingenuity and resilience. See secret trapdoors, underground
kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms. The more adventurous may
explore the deeper second, and even third level tunnels For those
preferring to remain above ground, there is ample opportunity to
view excavated areas from above.
Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of
each tunnel before entering - some are easily accessed by stairs. We
recommend good walking shoes and sun protection for this tour and
advise you may get a little dirty!
Free for dinner this evening. |

Day 13
Sat 24 Apr
B L |
SAIGON – MEKONG DELTA, CAN THO
Journey south of Saigon by road for approximately 3 hours to the
Mekong River town of Cai Be, where you will board a motorised sampan
for an introduction to life on the river.
Cai Be is known for its large floating market, where displays of
food produce are hung from bamboo poles over the host boat in order
to attract custom. From here the journey continues across the upper
reaches of the river to a maze of tributaries and fruit plantations.
Barges ply the route, overloaded with rice husks as fuel for the
region’s numerous brick kilns.
A sample of local tropical fruit will be served with lunch in a
local farmer's home before rejoining your craft for the leisurely
cruise to Vinh Long. From here, drive and ferry to the Delta's
economic hub, the city of Can Tho.
Check in for overnight at the VICTORIA CAN THO HOTEL situated in
lush gardens on the banks of the Hau River.

the colourful congestion of women and children jostling for space
and vying to sell their wares.
On shore, visit some of the riverside cottage industries.
A one hour drive takes us to Long Xuyen, where we board the Le Jarai
operated by the Victoria Hotel, to Chau Doc. The cruise takes 5
hours during which time guests will enjoy cocktails & fruit,
followed by lunch, as well as a cooking class on board.
On arrival at Chau Doc, check in at the French Colonial style

next to the Wat Phnom Pagoda.

Day 16
Tue 27 Apr

PHNOM PENH
This morning we visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum.
During the time of Pol Pot, this former school was used as a prison
for the detention and torture of thousands of Cambodians.
After being interrogated and tortured in Toul Sleng, the prisoners
were moved to extermination camps at Cheung Ek where they were
bludgeoned to death and buried in mass graves.
We pay a visit to Cheung Ek, a profoundly moving experience. Each
year on May 9th, the beautiful memorial stupa is the focal point for
the commemoration of the 1.7 million victims of the almost four year
genocidal reign of the Kmer Rouge.
After a morning of sobering sightseeing, we enjoy lunch at the
famous FCC Phnom Penh, which has since 1993 been a gathering place
for journalists, photographers, diplomats and intrepid world
travellers. Renowned for its views, the FCC overlooks the
convergence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers.
This afternoon we visit some of the cities finest attractions,
starting with the Royal Palace, which was built in 1866 by King
Norodom. The Palace is one of a number of structures within a
pagoda-style compound. Here we will see the Silver Pagoda, so named
because of its floor covered by 5,000 silver tiles. The treasures
include a solid gold Buddha weighing 90 kgs and encrusted with 9,584
diamonds, as well as a small 17th century emerald and baccarat
crystal Buddha. We move on to the National Museum, which houses
Khmer art - mainly sculptures, from different periods of Cambodian
history, 19th century dance costumes, royal barges and palanquins.
We end our day’s excursion with a visit to the Russian Market, where
you will be able to do some shopping for silk and other souvenirs.
Free for dinner this evening. |

This afternoon, we visit Angkor Wat, the world’s largest temple,
with a volume of
stone equalling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. It is unlike
all the other Khmer temples in that it faces west and is inspired by
12th Century Hinduism. Its symmetrical towers are sylized on the
modern Cambodian flag. Conceived by Suryavarman II, ngkor Wat took
an estimated 30 years to build.
The well preserved temple is generally believed to have been a
funeral temple for the king and been continuously occupied by
Buddhist monks. Intricate bas-reliefs surround Angkor Wat on four
sides. Each tells a story. The most celebrated of these is the
Churning of the Ocean of Milk, where the Naga serpent is twisted by
demons and gods to spurt out the elixir of life.
Our visit is timed to enjoy the sunset at Angkor Wat.
This evening we attend a dinner and cultural dance show at the
Apsara Theatre. |

Day 18
Thu 29 Apr
B D |
SIEM REAP
Morning visit to the monumental Angkor Thom - last capital
of the Khmers, with its Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper
King and the stunning Bayon temple. This 12th century masterpiece
lies at the very centre of Angkor Thom, an archaeological wonder of
symmetry and grandeur. The exterior gallery walls have extensive
bas-reliefs but the highlight is the more than 200 “faces” silent
but with the famous half-smile playing on their lips.
Enjoy an Elephant ride around the Bayon Temple
Return to your hotel for lunch at leisure.
This afternoon, visit Ta Prohm, the temple that has been left
largely in its natural state since its “re-discovery” by French
explorers. Surrounded by jungle, its labyrinth of stone hallways is
overgrown with the roots and limbs of massive banyan trees, which
envelop the stone like tentacles. It is one of the largest temples
at Angkor, dedicated in 1186. It is noted for its mystical charm.
Continue to Preah Khan, "The Sacred Sword", an extensive monastic
complex built by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a monastery and
teaching complex. The monastery covers an area of over 56 hectares,.
One of a group of temple complexes situated on a small 'Baray',
Preah Khan is the site of the World Monuments Fund ‘prime’ Asian
project of painstaking renovation, whilst maintaining it’s
mysterious allure and superb original structure.
This evening we will meet with members of the local Rotary Club for
dinner, fellowship and exchanging of banners. |

Day 19
Fri 30 Apr
B D |
SIEM REAP
There are two options for this morning’s sightseeing.
If you feel that you have done enough walking and seen enough
temples, you may prefer option 2.Option1: Early morning drive to Kbal Spean, a spectacularly carved
riverbed, set deep in the jungle to the northeast of Angkor. More
commonly referred to in English as the ‘River of a Thousand Lingas’,
the name actually means ‘bridge head’, a reference to the natural
rock bridges at the site. A half-hour steep walk takes you to the
carvings along a pleasant path through the jungle to the waterfall,
with interesting boulder formations along the way.
On the return to Siem Reap, visit Banteay Srei, the citadel of women
- a tiny, enchanting temple, which is one of the jewels of this
remarkable city. Built of red sandstone in the tenth century and
dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, the temple is decorated with
exquisitely carved male and female figures. This is the most Indian
of all the temples in Angkor and “a fairy palace in the heart of an
immense and mysterious forest”.
Option 2: Morning visit to the workshop of Les Artisans d‘Ankor
Afternoon at leisure.
This evening we will enjoy a special farewell dinner in the garden
of our hotel. |
